Auburn quarterback Payton Thorne said Tuesday he didn't check out of a 4th-and-1 play call against Georgia, contrary to what Hugh Freeze said postgame:

Payton Thorne assures that he and the Auburn coaches are on the same page moving forward. However, it is pretty clear that wasn’t the case Saturday during Auburn’s 31-13 loss to Georgia. Auburn started the fourth quarter with a fourth-and-1 on its 44-yard line , but Thorne was stuffed on what looked like a zone read.

Auburn Tigers head coach Hugh Freeze had no trouble pointing out that quarterback Payton Thorne changed the call on a botched 4th-down attempt.

Against Oklahoma, Thorne played one of his best games at Auburn, but threw a pick-six late in the fourth quarter that gave the Sooners the lead. On Saturday against Georgia, Freeze said Thorne “absolutely didn’t go with what he had called” on a late fourth down play where Auburn was stopped.

For the third time in as many weeks, the Auburn Tigers are making a change at the quarterback position. After redshirt freshman Hank Brown got the nod for Auburn’s last two contests, senior signal-caller Payton Thorne will re-claim his starting role this weekend against Oklahoma.
