California Attorney General Rob Bonta is leading a legal charge against TikTok, suing the social media company for allegedly using addictive features on young people to make ad money. Why it matters: 170 million people in the U.

The lawsuits stem from a national investigation into TikTok, which was launched in March 2022 by a bipartisan coalition of attorneys general from many states, including New York, California, Kentucky and New Jersey. All of the complaints were filed in state courts.

Sixty-three percent of all Americans between the ages of 13 and 17 said they use TikTok, according to a 2023 Pew Research survey.
